It happened again last year as the sun began to set just behind the tents of Sabor de Baja, the annual food and beverage pairing competition cum white attire culinary soirée at the Rosarito Beach Hotel: I couldn’t help but smile. Good food, good wines and good people just tend to induce that sort of reaction.
At one level, Sabor de Baja is a very serious competition, and an unusual one at that: it is neither the best dish nor the best beverage that wins the grand prize but rather the best pairing of dish and beverage!
But at another level, Sabor de Baja is a great party. For guests it is an opportunity to share great dishes and great beverages amongst friends — old and new. For those in the Baja food and wine and beer trades — who are readily accessible and extremely friendly — it is one more chance before the summer ends to get together and share some of what makes Baja so great.
As night falls, the competition has long since been done — all that’s left to it is announcing the winners — but the party has only barely started.
